Cornelia Overkamp Berg

WEBSTER - Cornelia (Connie) Overkamp Berg, 90, passed on May 9, 2010 at her residence. She was born on February 22, 1920 in Sioux City, Iowa of Dutch immigrants.

Connie moved to Holland, Michigan as a child and was raised in this beautiful Dutch town. After high school she traveled to Galveston (by the throw of a dart) with her brother where she met and married the “love of her life” Clarence Berg. Connie missed home and they moved back to Holland for a brief time, but Clarence (being a Galvestonian) only survived one harsh Holland winter – too much snow! She loved visiting family in Michigan and spending time at her brother, Erny’s family lakeside cottage.

Connie was a very loving person, always taking care of others. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In her younger years, she played golf but never beat her husband, Clarence. She was an excellent cook and was always collecting recipes. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, playing cards, bingo and visiting with her friends from Friendswood United Methodist Church. In her later years she was also an avid reader.

Connie was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence, Sr.; son, Clarence, Jr.; parents Abraham and Katie (Wierda) Overkamp; sister, Henrietta Baker; brothers, Richard, Raymond, Fred, William and Ernest Overkamp.

Connie is survived by her brother, Louis Overkamp, daughters, Carole Merritt and husband, John, Patty Hardy; grandchildren, Julie Leinenbach (Keith), John Merritt, Jr. (Tammy), Shelley Schultz (Chuck), Anthony Berg, Brent Biscamp (Paulina), Liberty Hardy; eighteen great-grandchildren; special friends, Jane Barrington, Larry Hinson (Jackie) and many other relatives, friends and her old dog, Elvis.

Graveside services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 13, 2010, at Hayes Grace Memorial Park Cemetery, 10708 Hwy 6, Hitchcock, with Reverend Jon Thornsbury officiating.  Interment will follow under the direction of Hayes Funeral Home.
