SANTA FE - Mr. Donald Ray Curtis passed from this life early Sunday morning, June 27, 2010, peacefully at home. Born August 22, 1923 in Sipe Springs, TX, Mr. Curtis had been a long time resident of Santa Fe since 1952. He retired with the U. S. Corp of Engineers after over 28 years of service, was a U. S. Army veteran having served in the European conflict during WWII and was awarded the Purple Heart. A member of the First Baptist Church of Hitchcock and the VFW Post # 5400 in Santa Fe, Donald enjoyed fishing, walking, playing dominos and cards. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Searcy and Essie Launa (Fowler) Curtis; brothers, Hayden Curtis and C.C. Curtis. Survivors include his loving wife of over 67 years, Thelma “Jackie” Curtis; daughters, Cheryl Jean Curtis; sons, Wayne Curtis and wife, Nicolette, Jimmy Don Curtis; sister, Elizabeth I. Bush; brother, D.D. Curtis; grandchildren, Brian Curtis and wife, Deanna, Karri Ann Brock and husband, Robert, Steven Curtis and wife, Evelyn, Brandi Kelly and husband, Jimmy, Blake Curtis, Brandon Bankus, Michael Whitten; 13 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 30, 2010, in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home with Reverend Bobby Cain officiating. Interment will follow at Hayes Grace Memorial Park Cemetery. Casketbearers will be Mr. Curtis’ grandchildren. Friends may call from 5 - 8 p.m. Tuesday in the parlor of Hayes Funeral Home, 10412 Highway 6, (409) 925-3501.
