James Albert Callahan
Hitchcock – Mr. James Albert Callahan passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at Mainland Center Hospital at the age of 77.
James was born January 8, 1932 in Montgomery, AL and had been a longtime resident of Hitchcock. He had retired from the U.S. Navy as Chief Petty Officer where he served in the Vietnam and Korean Wars. He was awarded numerous Presidential citations and commendations from the Navy and after receiving his honorable discharge in 1975, he was employed at UTMB of Galveston until his retirement. He was an accomplished pilot, having earned his twin engine license and eventually became a flight instructor. Mr. Callahan was a member of the Scottish-Rite Masonic Temple of South Bend Indiana, loved to fish, travel, collect military memorabilia, was a very avid reader and loved good-looking Cadillac’s. James lived his life to the fullest.
He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his loving wife of many years, Betty Callahan; daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Douglas Kruger, Mary Sue and Kurt Hilzinger, Kathleen and Dan Thies, all of Nebraska, Maureen Callahan of Texas; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A private cremation will be conducted under the direction of Hayes Funeral Home.
