James Calvin Kinchen
James Calvin Kinchen, 72, left the company of his loving family to be with his Lord and Savior in Heaven on December 10, 2010 after a courageous two year battle with leukemia. He was born in De Valls Bluff, AR on April 9, 1938 to J.D. and Pauline Kinchen.
He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 49 years, Susan Pride Kinchen. He is preceded by his father, J.D. Kinchen who is waiting with open arms for the coming of his son.
He is also survived by his mother, Pauline Davis; brother, L.C. Kinchen and wife, Barbara; sister, Nora May and husband, Wayne; daughter, Marlene Simmons and husband, Mylo; daughter, Pamala Cagle and daughter, Ellenor Reyes and husband, Henry.
He also leaves behind a legacy of eleven grandchildren, Nate Wilson, Rachel Hill, Melissa and Chelsea Simmons, Heather Keller and husband, Brent, Stephen Cagle and wife, Jessica, Nick, Adrienne and Susan Cagle, Samantha and Savannah Reyes; nine great-grandchildren, Alex and Andrew Hill, Brooke and Lucas Wilson, Cameron and Megan Keller, Ethan Cagle, Jorja “Peas” Hamilton and Madison Cagle.
He served valiantly in the United States Navy from 1956-1960. It was during his enlistment that he met his future bride. They were wed in ’61 and moved to Hitchcock, TX where he spent 28 years working for HL&P at the P.H. Robinson Plant and retired as a shift supervisor.
In his spare time, it was a rare sight to see him without a fishing pole in hand. He spent many of his days fishing with his father and brother in Offats Bayou. Later in life, he would travel to meet his brother at Lake Livingston where the pair spent many hours catching prize fish. It was said that he was the only man who could catch a fish on a gravel road.
His passion for fishing was only exceeded by his love of family and the Lord. He spent 19 wonderful years at Temple Baptist Church under the pastorship of Rudy Rios. Much of his time was spent as a youth group leader and with AWANA. He was also the go-to guy for just about everything-maintenance, running the sound, cooking for fundraisers. If there was a need, he was there to fill it. He did so with a smile on his face and expected nothing in return. His riches are awaiting him in Glory.
In lieu of sending flowers, the family asks that any contributions be made to the AWANA Club of Temple Baptist Church, P.O. Box 2157, Texas City, Texas 77590. A special thanks also goes out to the nurses and caretakers at the MD Anderson Cancer Center who gave such great care to him in his battle with leukemia and in his final days; and, to Dr. Daniel Piazza of LaMarque, TX for his compassionate care and concern.
Memorial services will be conducted 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 16, 2010, at Temple Baptist Church, 1200 22nd St. North, Texas City, with Brother Rudy Rios officiating under the direction of Hayes Funeral Home, (409) 925-3501. www.hayesfuneralhome.com
