John W. West, Sr.
SANTA FE - Mr. John W. West, Sr. passed from this life Wednesday evening, April 15, 2009, in Texas City.
Born October 17, 1926 in Galveston, TX, Mr. West had been a resident of Santa Fe, previously of Roosevelt and Galveston. He had served in the US Army, worked at Todd Shipyard in Galveston, Tin Smelter in Texas City and John W. had owned and operated John W. West General Contractor for over 40 years. John was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, a life member and past master of Junction City Masonic Lodge #548, member and past master of La Marque Masonic Lodge #1325. He was an avid Texas history and Texas Ranger buff and enjoyed spending his time hunting, fishing, camping and listening to blue grass music.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eric Henry and Margaret Isabell (Baker) West; brothers, Al West, Earl West, Orville West, Leroy West and sister, Gertrude Catching.
Survivors include his loving wife of over 63 years, Mary (Chide) West; son, John W. (J. W.) West, Jr. and wife, Dianne; daughter, Marilyn and husband, Robert (Don) LeCompte, all of Santa Fe; brother, Charles West of Markham; sister, Carol Wright of Galveston; grandchildren and their spouses, Robert LeCompte, Jr. and wife, Sophia, Stacey and Seth Whitmire, Ashley and James Hinson, Michelle and Chad Pourchot, Pamela Jones, Randy and Jennie Dillon, Ryan and Sha Dillon, Michael Dillon, Kevin Dillon; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 20, 2009, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Reverend John Kappe, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery with Masonic Rites rendered by La Marque Masonic Lodge #1325.
Casketbearers will be his nephews, Jason Chide, Kenny Chide, Lenny Chide, Carl Prater, David Prater, Tim Schilling, Butch West and George West. Honorary bearers will be his grandsons.
Visitation will be held from 5 - 8 p.m. Sunday at Hayes Funeral Home, 10412 Highway 6, (409) 925-3501, with a Vigil Service beginning at 7:00 p.m. with Deacon Joe Kelly officiating. A Rosary will follow recited by Mr. Don LeCompte.
