Robert D. Davenport, Jr.

 

HITCHCOCK, TEXAS – Robert D. Davenport, Jr., 73, of Hitchcock, passed away peaceably on Saturday, June 18, 2011, at his home in Hitchcock with friends at his side after a short but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

 

     He was born May 30, 1938, in Durham, North Carolina to Robert D. Davenport, Sr. and Lula Gladys Cheek Davenport, both now deceased.  Mr. Davenport attended Hampton-Sydney College and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Duke University in Durham, NC.  After serving in the United States Army Medical Corps he continued training and became a certified medical technologist.  He worked many years on the administrative staff at Duke University.  In 1970 he joined the administrative staff of The Methodist Hospital at The Texas Medical Center in Houston serving as Academic Administrator for the Department of Medicine until 1975.  He subsequently worked the next twenty-eight years as the Academic Administrator for the Department of Radiology at the Baylor College of Medicine in The Texas Medical Center in Houston.  He enjoyed owning, training and showing Arabian horses.  He studied and played concert pipe organ throughout his life.

 

     He is survived by his sister, Linda Davenport Strong of Kure Beach, NC; niece, Sherry Reece and husband, Jim; grand-nieces, Taylor and Jamie Reece of Leland, NC; nephew, David D. Jones and wife, Jenny of Wilmington, NC; nephew, Timothy A. Jones and wife, Lauren of Brooklyn, NY; aunt, Mrs. Mabel W. Cheek of Graham, NC; cousin, Mrs. Miriam Cheek of Rincon, GA; cousin, Mrs. Bonnie MacLauchlan Norton of Hartfield, VA; cousin, Barbara Cheek Parekh of Athens, GA; cousin, Doug Cheek of Raleigh, NC; cousin, Jeff Cheek of Garner, NC; cousin, H. James Cheek and wife, Linda of Portsmouth, VA; cousins, Richard MacLauchlan and Allan MacLauchlan both of Riverview, FL; and many grand-nieces and nephews; lifetime friends, Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Foster of Seattle, WA, Dr. and Mrs. James R. Harrell of Houston, TX, Dr. Ervin J. Dunham of Baton Rouge, LA, Mr. Sam R. Brown of Greenville, DE, Mr. William D. Church also of Greenville, DE, Dr. Paul J. Vanderwood of San Diego, CA, Prof. Joseph Mejia of Beaumont, TX, and many friends and colleagues throughout The Texas Medical Center in Houston, TX.

 

     The family would like to thank his doctors and cancer team at The M. D. Anderson Cancer Institute Houston for their dedicated and loving care given Bob during his last days.  Special thanks go to his wonderful neighbor, Mrs. Norma Price and loyal caregiver, Travis D. Nuckols both of Hitchcock, TX.
