Bertanell Matthews

 

HITCHCOCK - Mrs. Bertanell Matthews passed from this life Wednesday afternoon, February 10, 2010, in Webster.

 

     Born April 3, 1929 in Pasadena, TX, Mrs. Matthews had been a longtime resident of Hitchcock and was actively involved with her neighbors in the Greenwood Subdivision.  She had been a former Hitchcock librarian at Crosby Middle School, a founding member of the Midway Church of Christ and an avid bible study student.  Bertanell enjoyed spending her time painting, quilting, gardening, walking and exercising.

 

     She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Claude D. “Chick” Matthews, Jr.; son, D. Michael Matthews; parents, Other Thurston and Madelene (Lambert) Duncan.

 

     Survivors include her daughters, Teresa J. Whitten of Katy, Madelene L. Matthews of Santa Fe; daughter-in-law, Stella Matthews-Perez of Texas City; brothers, John P. Duncan and wife, Lois of Seguin, Bruce J. Duncan and wife, Elsie of Kirbyville; grandchildren, Mike Whitten, Brandy Kelley, Jenifer Alena, Tony Whitten, Morgan Matthews and 12 great-grandchildren.

 

     Funeral Services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 13, 2010, in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home with Mr. Russell McLaughlin officiating.  Interment will follow at Hayes Grace Memorial Park Cemetery.

 

     Friends may call from 5 - 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, 10412 Highway 6, Hitchcock (409) 925-3501.

 

     Those who wish may make memorials in the form of donations to the American Diabetes Society, Houston office, 2400 Augusta Drive, #175, Houston, TX 77057-4989 and/or the Alzheimer’s Association, 2242 W. Holcombe Blvd. Houston, TX 77030-2008. 

 

     Mrs. Matthew’s family would like to express a special thank you to Bayou City Home Health Care, Compassionate Care Hospice, Aida Tinney of Meadow Glenn PCH and the families of Tony and Terri Williams, Gary and Joann Freeze and Jean Sheppard for their years of love and support in caring for their mom.
