Corinne “Connie” Lasseigne Duhon
SANTA FE - Mrs. Corinne “Connie” Lasseigne Duhon passed from this life Friday morning, July 24, 2009, at home in Santa Fe.
Connie Duhon was born May 30, 1924, in Catahoula, a small French-speaking town in Southwest, LA, the center of “Cajun” country. She married Dua Duhon and moved to Bermuda where they started their family. During WWII, she served her country as an exterior ship welder at Avondale Shipyard in New Orleans, LA. Later, she was a “Rosie the Riveter” for Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, WA, then was transferred to Los Angeles, CA. She was known for her inability to say, “I can’t”. She could do anything and do it very well. After the war, her life was spent keeping her family together by moving wherever Dua’s dredging job took them. She took pride in being a housewife and a mother. Because she was forced to quit school in the fourth grade during the depression, education for herself and her children was of major importance. She very proudly achieved her educational goal at the age of 50 by completing her G.E.D. in only 4 ½ months. When Dua became disable, they had just settled in Youngsville, LA and she went back into the workforce as a waitress at several restaurants in and around Lafayette, LA. After suffering a back injury, she became the director of an educational facility for mentally challenged adults at the Bares Ranch. Later she went to work for Petroleum Helicopters where she eventually became head of their upholstery shop. She retired from there after 10 years of service. Her last nine years of life were spent in Santa Fe, TX. She could do just about anything from pouring a concrete slab or roofing a house to knitting and crocheting. Cooking and baking was also in her list of many talents. Her motto was, “If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right.” She set a good example for her family and friends to admire and follow.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dua Duhon; parents, Willie and Rita (Borel) Lasseigne; sisters, Mandonia Courville, Sorita Broussard, Tessie Doucet, Yolande Picard, Bessie LeBlanc and brother Alphonse Lasseigne.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Donald and Suzanne Duhon of Pineville, LA.
