ARCADIA - Mrs. Delpha Louise (Powers) Long passed from this life Monday afternoon, February 1, 2010, in Santa Fe. Born April 11, 1924 in Texas City, Mrs. Long had been a lifelong resident of Arcadia. A graduate of Santa Fe High School and Sam Houston State University where she received her Bachelor’s Degree, Mrs. Long began her long and rewarding career as a school teacher with Santa Fe ISD when she was 18 years old and continued until her retirement in 1989. She was a member of Arcadia Christian Church where she taught several Sunday school classes over the years, participated in the PTA and served as a Den Mother in the Cub Scouts. Delpha loved tutoring children, quilting and will be fondly remembered for “Miss Delpha’s Big Cookies”. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Richard Long; parents, Edgar Andrew and Zada Blanche (Tully) Powers; grandson, Kyle McCray; brother and sister-in-law, Jearl and Helen Powers; brothers-in-law, Jack Long, John Windham, Pete deGroot and Claude Baker. Survivors include her sons, Bob McCray and wife, Ann of Santa Fe; Jim McCray of Houston; daughters and sons-in-law, Ruth and Reggie Crosby, Mary and Clyde Lauzon, all of Santa Fe; sisters, Nettie Ratliff of New Braunfels, Zada Long and Iris Windham, both of Santa Fe; sister-in-law Cora Mae deGroot of Santa Fe; grandchildren, Patrick McCray and wife, Emily, Sparky Locke and wife, Ruth, Regina Crosby, Kim Hardy; great-grandchildren, Brett Hardy, Alexander Locke, Jane Locke, Michaela Crosby, Evan McCray and Olivia McCray. Funeral services will be conducted 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 5, 2010, at Arcadia Christian Church with Mr. Reggie Crosby, Mr. John A. Windham and Pastor Tom Medlin officiating. Interment will follow at Hayes Grace Memorial Park under the direction of Hayes Funeral Home.
Casketbearers will Patrick McCray, Sparky Locke, Pete deGroot, Jr., Gary Windham, Ben Findeisen and Bryce Baker. Honorary casketbearer will be Brett Hardy.
