Grace “Nannie” Wheelis

 

GALVESTON - Mrs. Grace “Nannie” Wheelis passed from this life Wednesday afternoon, April 14, 2010, peacefully at home surrounded by her family.

 

     Born July 10, 1912 in Galveston, TX, Mrs. Wheelis had been a lifetime resident of Galveston.  She had been an aide on the special education bus for Galveston ISD for 13 years and continued volunteering with the special kids until she was 92.  She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Sons of Hermann and the Sunriser’s Bowling League for over 45 years. Grace enjoyed baking cakes, cooking and her family favorite was noodles and cheese.  She enjoyed spending hours watching her “Boys”, the Astros play ball.

 

     She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, J. W. Wheelis, parents, Joseph and Cecilia (Dufour) Bates, brothers, D. L. Bates, Freddie Bates, Louis Hunt, Douglas Hunt; sister, Geraldine Bass.

 

     Survivors include her children, Joseph Wayne Wheelis, Sr. and wife, Virginia of Baytown, Ann Marie Adgate and husband, Tom of Shreveport, LA, Joni Kay Vitek and husband, James of Santa Fe, Joseph Wayne Wheelis, Jr. and wife, Maryann of Galveston; 14 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.

 

     Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 17, 2010, in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home with Reverend Robert Dowdy officiating.  Interment will follow at Hayes Grace Memorial Park Cemetery.

 

     Casketbearers will be Mavrick Adgate, Tim Adgate, Todd Adgate, Tom Adgate, Jr., Murphy Adgate, Michael Coleman, David Ewald and James Hall.  Honorary bearers will be Fred Ewald, III, Robert McCamy and Ryan McCamy.

 

     Friends may call from 5 - 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, 10412 Highway 6, (409) 925-3501.
