Irene Berger Houston
SANTA FE - Mrs. Irene Berger Houston passed away peacefully at her home Sunday, October 10, 2010 after a brief illness, Born November 10, 1917 in Grassyville, Texas, she had been a resident of Santa Fe for over fifty years. She was a long time member of Peace Lutheran Church in Texas City.
Irene was a wife, mother and homemaker who enjoyed spending time with her family and being outdoors. She spent much of her time gardening and tending to her animals. She loved well and was well loved.
She is survived by her children, J.D. Symmank and wife, Margaret of Santa Fe, Carolyn Houston of Alvarado, TX, and Don Walla of Santa Fe; brother, David Berger and wife, Margie of Gulfport, MS; grandchildren, Thomas Norman Symmank of Bacliff, Tina Symmank of Dickinson, Joshua Symmank and wife, Amanda of League City, and Philip Symmank of Bryan, TX; great-grandchildren, Meagan Brey, Isaiah and Victoria Kirk, Jude and Hazel Symmank; Sister-in-law, Josephine Houston of Santa Fe; brother-in-law, Lee Houston and wife, Barbara of Houston, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Houston was preceded in death by her parents, Ernst and Emma Berger, her husband of 18 years, John Edward Symmank, and her husband of 47 years, Ben Houston; daughter, Shirley Ann Symmank; sisters, Estelle Berger and Amanda Schautschick.
Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 14, 2010, in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home with Reverend Matthew Brackman officiating. Interment will follow at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery.
Casketbearers will be Bob Hoyland, Jeffrey Pietsch, Melvin Houston, Joshua Symmank, Philip Symmank and Thomas Symmank; honorary bearer will be Tommy Edwards.
