LaVerne Clarice Grimes

 

SANTA FE - Mrs. LaVerne Clarice Grimes went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Thursday morning, June 2, 2011, after a courageous battle with cancer.

 

     Born October 10, 1930 in Columbia, LA, Mrs. Grimes had been a resident of Santa Fe for 27 years, previously of Texas City and Beaumont.  She had been employed as an executive secretary with the College of the Mainland for 20 years and formerly with an insurance company in Beaumont. Her memberships include Arcadia First Baptist Church and the Volunteer Christian Builders, and she also enjoyed volunteering at nursing homes, going to garage sales, traveling, camping, cooking outside, playing games, visiting Colorado and reading to her children and grandchildren.

 

     She was preceded in death by her son, David Allen Grimes; parents, Nina Marie (Poole) Williams and Roy Williams; baby sister, Nina Marie.

 

     Survivors include her loving husband of 59 years, William “Bill” Grimes of Santa Fe; daughters, Sherry A. Ottinger and husband, Donnis of Santa Fe, Debbie Ellis and husband, Steven of Texas City; grandchildren, Kimberly Grimes, Amanda Moore, Jeremy Ottinger, Nolan Ellis, Kristin Allen and husband, Chris; great-grandson, Shealynn Allen; sisters, Muriel Norris of Pineville, LA, Myra White and husband, James of Lumberton, TX.

 

     Funeral services will be conducted 10:00 a.m. Monday, June 6, 2011, at Arcadia First Baptist Church with Dr. Rick Smith officiating.  Interment will follow at Forest Park East Cemetery under the direction of Hayes Funeral Home.

 

     Casketbearers will be Nolan Ellis, Brian Harris, Cliff Harris, Jeremy Ottinger, Gary White and Jimmy White.  Honorary bearers will be Chris Allen and James Kenneth Norris.

 

     Visitation will be 3 - 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, 10412 Highway 6, (409) 925-3501.

 

     Those who wish may make memorials in the form of donations to the Arcadia First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 128, Santa Fe, TX 77517 and/or Aim at Melanoma, 3217 Bob O’Link Court, Plano, TX 75093, aimatmelanoma.org. 

 

     Mrs. Grimes’ family would like to express a special thank you to her caregivers, Dr. Wen-Jen Hwu and team, Guardian Angels Home Health, Debbie Cox, RN, Sharon Wallace, CNA, Odyssey Hospice, Mary Lanehart, RN, Tiea Larance, CNA, Heather Berryhill, CNA, Vernon Moon and Maureen Groebner.
