Pearl Howard Kemmerling Martin

 

     LA MARQUE – Mrs. Pearl Howard Kemmerling Martin passed from this life Saturday morning, February 2, 2008, just 27 days before her 100th birthday.

 

     Born February 29, 1908 (leap year) in Redwood, Louisiana, the oldest of 9 children of Nelson Henry and Ida Marie (Gotia) Howard, Mrs. Martin had been a 59 year resident of La Marque, previously of Galveston.  She was of the Catholic faith, had worked as a caregiver at Moody State School for Crippled Children in Galveston for many years before retiring in 1966, enjoyed quilting, sewing, crocheting, spending time in her flower garden watching the wildlife and tending her flowers and was a huge fan of Lawrence Welk.

 

     She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Elsie Mae Phillips; brothers, Bob, Cleveland and Daniel Howard; sisters, Nell Medlock, Bertha Camp, Elsie Mae Herrington, Josephine Tuttoilmondo and Julia Marie Palmer.

 

     Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Mildred and Guy Cook, Jr., Earline and John Couch, all of La Marque, Patricia and Danny Harvey of Winnsboro; grandchildren, Suzanne Gibson-Reed, Guy Cook, III, John Couch, II and wife, Susan, Carolyn Spenser and husband Robert, Forrest Couch and wife Cheri, Charlene Smikal and husband, Roger, Charles Ray Phillips, II, Michelle Smikal, Kelly Ray Phillips and wife, Rhonda, Georgette Medina, Dana Gilliland, Danny Harvey and wife, Victoria; 27 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

 

     A funeral mass will be celebrated 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 5, 2008, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Reverend John Kappe, Celebrant.  Interment will follow at Grace Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Hayes Funeral Home.

 

     Casketbearers will be Guy Cook, III, Forrest Couch, John Couch, II, Danny Burt Harvey, Charles Ray Phillips, II and Kelly Ray Phillips.  Honorary bearers will be Louis Bodine, Victor Covey, J. D. Kemmerling and Walter Boyd Kint.
