Rosie Kelley Wilson, “Rose”
Rose died Feb 17, 2010, after a bout with lung cancer (she never smoked). She was born on Dec 4, 1943, in Silsbee, Texas, in an area known for its independent men. She also frequently exhibited an independent streak, which was usually corrected by a hand applied to the bottom. However, just after high school she again exerted her independence and took a job with the FBI in Washington, DC. She worked there for several years, then later with the Treasury Department and the Federal Election Commission. She became an excellent secretary and studied for and became a Certified Professional Secretary. In 1985 she and her husband, Gary Wilson, moved to League City to work for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration at Johnson Space Center. In 1988, she became Secretary to the JSC Center Director, Aaron Cohen. When NASA offered an early retirement option, she and Gary applied for and received approval. They retired to Fredericksburg, TX, and lived there for nine years. In 2004, they moved back to Alvin, TX, to be with her three sons and grandchildren. Although she had never smoked, she was diagnosed with lung cancer in early 2008. During her retirement she had begun quilting and produced a large number of quilts, several of which won ribbons in the county fairs in Fredericksburg. She and Gary joined a dance group in Fredericksburg and participated in demonstration dances of Polka, Waltz and other old time country dances. She loved to travel in her small travel trailer and to bird watch. She was well known as a friendly person who could never resist helping a friend in need. Among her favorite things was digging worms with her grandson, Eddie IV (she was studying to be a Master Gardner); she spent much time in the past dressing up her granddaughter, Kayleen, in fancy dresses; and making Christmas cookies was a ritual with her grandsons, Jimmy and Nathan. Rose was an active member of the Alvin First United Methodist Church and helped found the Prayers and Squares ministry to provide prayer quilts to the sick and infirm. She also was a member of the Gulf Coast Quilt Guild, and played Mah Jong at the Senior Center each week.
She is survived by her husband, Gary C. Wilson; her son, Edward L. Wisenbaler, III and his wife, Stephanie and grandson, Edward IV; son, James M. Wisenbaler and his wife, Connie and granddaughter, Kayleen and grandson, James, II; and son, Ty A. Wilson, all of Alvin; her brother, Leon Kelley and sisters, Beatrice Harrison and Reba Bass, and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 20, 2010, at the Alvin United Methodist Church in Alvin, Texas.
