     SANTA FE - Mr. Norris Edward Smith passed from this life Thursday morning, April 20, 2017, in Texas City.

     Born October 13, 1941 in Alvin, Mr. Smith had been a lifelong resident of the area. He was a member of the Order Of The Odd Fellows in Alvin, helped with 4-H groups and boy scouts, rode bulls in the rodeos, enjoyed leather tooling, hunting, fishing especially oystering and floundering and was an avid John Wayne fan.

     He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack Smith and Alma Faye (Newlin) Merchant; brothers, Lonnie Merchant and John Merchant; step-father, Malachi Merchant.

     Survivors include his life partner, Linda Sutton; sons, Jeff Smith and wife, Katherine of Alvin, Randy Smith and wife, Tammy of Oklahoma, Michael Smith and wife, Belinda of Alvin, Wayne Wilkerson and wife, Donna of Santa Fe; daughters, Rebecca Vernier and husband, Dr. Steve Vernier of Yukon, Oklahoma, Debbie Allen and husband, Charlie of Santa Fe, Becky Humbird and husband, Jerry of Santa Fe; brothers, Charlie Merchant of Santa Fe, William Merchant and wife, Edie of Virginia; sister, Alice Nillen of Santa Fe; mother of his children, Arleen Smith of Alvin; mother-in-law, Edna Avitts of Alvin; grandchildren, Austin and Travis Vernier, Logan and Alannah Smith, Robert Rogers, Kayla and Brandon Smith, James Smith, Randy Verm, Kristina Fortner, Emily Humbird, Lindsey Verm, Melissa Evans, Lauren Hunt, Anthony Humbird, Daniel Wilkerson, Hannah Wilkerson, Nikolas Humbird; great-grandchildren, Mia Verm, Bernice Verm, Parker Evans, Braxton Evans, Jaxon Evans, Makayla Hunt, Harley Rogers; numerous nieces and nephews.

     Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2017, in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home, with Pastor Bob Gibson officiating.

     Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Avitts, Robert “Skip” Avitts, Benjie Merchant, Charlie Merchant and Mac Merchant.

     Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, 10412 Highway 6, Hitchcock, TX (409) 925-3501.

     Memorials in the form of donations may be made in Norris name to the charity of your choice.
