Steve Cameron Barlow

Steve Cameron Barlow was born on March 19, 1938, in San Augustine, Texas, to Hazel Marie Sallee, nee Cameron, and A.C. Barlow.  He served in the U.S. Air Force where he taught electronics, and in the U.S. Marine Corps.  A graduate of Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, Steve worked many years in the field of social services with both juvenile and adult prisoners, at Gatesville State School for Boys (Mountainview Unit), at Texas Rehabilitation Commission, and as an Adult Probation Officer for the State of Texas.  Steve was an experienced, licensed pilot and flight instructor. An ordained Baptist minister, he briefly pastored a number of small churches in both Mississippi and in the Abilene, Texas, area.

Steve was a lifelong teacher and student of the Scriptures. A man who was keenly aware of his own failings in life, he knew that his hope rested solely in the life, death, and resurrection of God’s only Son, Jesus Christ. Steve knew he was a vessel of God’s mercy.  It was his privilege to serve the Lord in many ways throughout his life, as he had opportunity.  Whether he was flying Bibles and missionaries to Mexico, bringing food to the homeless, overseeing relief efforts for hurricane victims, or teaching one of his many Bible studies, he was a bold witness for the Lord, and in this regard a great blessing and example to his many friends and to his family. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

Steve is survived by his wife, Elaine Barlow; his four daughters Dee Ann Nagengast, Debbie Barlow, Diana Barlow Llorente, and Danna Pearson; their husbands, 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 2 sisters, 3 brothers, and numerous nieces and nephews.  His daughters would like to express their heartfelt thanks to their mother, Anita Darlene Llorente, for her compassionate and tireless care of their Dad during his illness in the last 8 months of his life, as well as to the caring nurses and aides of Traditions Hospice, without whose patience and help she could not have maintained the level of care in her home that he deserved and needed.

Steve is preceded in death by his parents, and by his infant daughter, Dawn Barlow.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 23, 2018, in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home.

Memorials in the form of donations may be made in Steve’s name to Gulf Coast Foursquare Church, 6205 Delany Road, Hitchcock Texas 77563.
