SANTA FE - Mr. Nick John Sckittone, Sr. passed away at his residence in Santa Fe, Texas on March 8, 2024, at the age of 97. His two sons and four granddaughters kept constant vigil by his side in his last days.
Nick was the third child born to Vincent and Mary (Vitanza) Sckittone on November 8, 1926, in Alta Loma (later Santa Fe), where he lived his entire life. He left school in 9th grade to help support his family after his brothers left for service in World War II. He joined the Navy in 1944, was a survivor of the Texas City disaster, a Charter member of the Alta Loma fire department, and was employed as a heavy equipment operator. In 1949, he married Roselyn Bouligny, and they were together for 49 years until her death in 1996. After retiring, Nick enjoyed woodworking, creating everything from outdoor decorations to chairs, and weaving, creating many pieces for people to cherish. Nick was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Hitchcock.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Roselyn; grandson, Clinton; brothers, Carmello and Anthony (Eva); sisters, Nora Murello (Victor), Catherine Motl; brother-in-law, Paul Hadley, and longtime companion, Norma Price.
Survivors include his sons, Nick Sckittone, Jr. and wife, Debbie, Nolan Sckittone and wife, Renee; granddaughters, Amy, Lauren, Dana, and Shelby; sister, Rosie Hadley; brother-in-law, Louis Motl; many nieces and nephews.
Nick had an excellent memory, and we loved his detailed stories about his life and what the area was like when he was young.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2024, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Reverend Larry Wilson, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Alta Loma Cemetery.
Casketbearers will be his 4 granddaughters and nephews, Carl Sckittone and Billy Hadley. Honorary bearers will be Frank and Al Corsaro.
Visitation will be held from 5 - 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hayes Funeral Home, 10412 Highway 6, (409) 925-3501, with a rosary beginning at 7:00 p.m. recited by Mr. Don LeCompte.
A heartfelt appreciation goes to Renee for her dedication in preparing many of Nick’s meals.
