Anna Ruth (Thompson) Hickey
SWEENY - Mrs. Anna Ruth (Thompson) Hickey passed from this life Tuesday morning, January 31, 2023, in Sweeny. Anna Ruth was born August 22, 1936, in Fort Worth to I.A. and Alice (Palmer) Thompson, Sr. Anna Ruth was a natural artist, even from a young age. While in school, she learned to play musical instruments and quickly took to art. Anna Ruth furthered her education by attending the University of North Texas where she received her Master’s in Education. She found a teaching job as the music educator for Sweeny ISD and it was there that she was able to teach her students about the positive impact music can have in their lives. After moving to Sweeny, Anna Ruth was surprised to meet a handsome man named Maurice Hickey and in 1969, they were married. Anna Ruth was a devout Catholic who was a long-time member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. She enjoyed staying active in the church and playing the organ on Sundays. Anna Ruth always had something in her hands. She was a talented crocheter and knitter. She could make just about anything. Anna Ruth made a wonderful impact on the many lives she touched but we know this is not the end – we will see her again.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Irwin Arthur and Alice Edwina (Palmer) Thompson, Sr.; husband, Maurice Anthony “Spike” Hickey; granddaughter, Kaitlyn Riley Gray; 1 sister; 4 brothers.
Survivors include her daughters, Joanna Marie Hickey, Angela Lysle Gray; grandchildren, Madeline Leigh Shaw Gray, Jackson Ryan Gray, USN Seaman, Evelyn Jean Gray; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Riley Mitchell, Henry Anthony Mitchell; numerous nieces and nephews.
A private cremation was conducted under the direction of Hayes Funeral Home.
A celebration of life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 6, at First Baptist Church, 402 N. Main Street, Sweeny, Texas.
A memorial mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 17, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 310 N. McKinney Street, Sweeny, Texas.
