Everett Ray Howard, Sr. was born to Leonard C. and Isabelle Anna (Crainer) Howard on October 27, 1940, in Galveston, Texas. He was known as Ray to his family and friends. Ray married Diane Mullins on August 12, 1961. Ray worked for 30 years as a Longshoreman under ILA Locals 20 and 1665. He retired in 1989. After retirement, he spent his days as a farmer, rancher and a softball coach. He spent much of his time baling hay all over Galveston, Brazoria and Harris Counties. Ray’s favorite thing to do was to spend time with his family, his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ray was a devoted member of Midway Church of Christ.

Ray is survived by his wife, Diane Howard; son, Everett Ray Howard, Jr. and wife, Madelaine of Grapevine; daughters, Lana Bigford of Santa Fe and Deborah Patton and husband, Jason of Itasca; honorary daughters, Kaylin Kolenovsky and husband, Eddie and Sheyenne Krysher; grandchildren, Brandie and husband, Jim Cargile, Brittanie and husband, Brady McGee, Lea Howard, Birdie Howard, Taylor Patton, Brooke Bigford and Jaxon Patton; honorary granddaughter, Elizabeth Jones; great-grandchildren, Harper Cargile, Hudson Cargile and Brynnlie McGee; brother, Frank C. Howard of George West, Texas; sisters-in-law, Gail (LV) Perkins, Cynthia Hayes, Lewene Vassberg (Jerry), Vicki Cook (Randy); brother-in-law, Randy (Melinda) Mullins; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Lewis T. Mullins, Peggy “Gene” Mullins and Oveda Mullins; brother, Leonard Charles Howard, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Faye Howard and Kathie Howard; son-in-law, Johnnie Bigford; brother-in-law, Lewis Rodney Mullins.

Services are as follows: visitation will be on Thursday, January 4, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hayes Funeral Home, 10412 State Highway 6, Hitchcock, Texas, 77563. The funeral service will be on Friday, January 5, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Hayes Funeral Home. A graveside and burial service will be in Meridian, Texas on Saturday, January 6, 2024, at 12 noon.

Pallbearers will be Jim Cargile, Brady McGee, Eric Mendoza, Jerry Robinson, Matt Robinson, Thomas Robinson, Darron Ray and Grady McGee. Honorary pallbearers will be Jaxon Patton, Harper Cargile, Hudson Cargile and Brynnlie McGee.

Memorials in the form of donations may be made in Everett’s name Midway Church of Christ, Post Office Box 347, Hitchcock, TX 77563.
