George Garrido, Jr. Obituary

GEORGE H. GARRIDO JR.

On one of the coldest mornings on record for Santa Fe, Texas, on February 15, 2021 our father, George (Junito) H. Garrido Jr. left this world. Guided by his heavenly family, friends and faithful fur buddy Dallas, he set forward to his next journey, where I am sure he will have a talk with Heavenly Father and ask him to help the Cowboys win a Super bowl next year. Anyone who knew our dad thought he was a character. He loved his family and friends and never left anything unsaid to those he loved. Right behind his family our dad loved his Dallas Cowboys. He was born and raised in the Bronx New York and was an avid Yankee fan. Not just when they were winning, but always! Dad loved to sing and, in his 20’s, he was in a Doo-Wop band called Marvin Nash and the Chevelles. Dad and two girls were the Chevelles. Marvin gave dad the stage name Frankie Diamond. He loved that name because it was as flashy as his personality. You can go to YouTube and hear two of the songs he co-wrote and sang back up to, Dina and Darling. Dad was proud of his Cuban heritage; both his parents were of Cuban and Taino descent. His paternal grandmother’s family was one of the first families of the Canary Islands. Dad’s favorite Cuban dish was Ropa Vieja.  Our dad’s passions were baseball, football, billiards, playing cards with his friends at Heritage Crossing, especially Cindy and Helen (Dad swore they cheated), singing Doo-Wop karaoke, listening to Classic Rock, and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Sherry Longwell Garrido, his mother Dinora Pages Casanova, his father George H. Garrido Sr., his Step-Father Ismael Casanova Sr., his brother Evelio Casanova, his former mother-in-law and one of his favorite people, Margie Juanita O’Neal Cayton and his best friend Ronnie Roller.

Our dad said that his greatest legacy was his family. Our dad leaves his loving memories to be cherished by his sister, Sonjia Casanova Dihigo and husband Jose, and his brothers, Ismael Casanova Jr. and Vincent Casanova, his double 1st cousin, Margaret (Maggie) Garrido Vargas, his brother-in-law Stanley DeWitt Irish and partner Jeffrey Ryder, his son Michael S. Garrido and his daughters, Angela M. Garrido Ryan and husband James, and Sherri L. Garrido Berry and husband Michael Ray. Dad was so proud of his grandchildren, Schon M. Patlan and wife Linda, Krystiana M. Weiland and husband James Dean, Stephanie T. Stansbury and husband Cody, Jordan M. Garrido and Clarissa, and Macie M. Berry. He enjoyed holidays and visits with his great-grandchildren; Rico, Aiden, Felicity, Isaiah, Fiona, Iliana, Ava, Ya Ya, and Skylar. All of dad’s family and friends are just too vast to name everyone. So, please know that if my dad knew you he loved you.

On behalf of the family, we would like to thank AMED Hospice and especially Stacey Hoffman, for their care and concern for our dad and family. We also owe a debt of gratitude for the love and care given to our dad by Cindy Scholwinski and Lisa Roller (Wife of the late Ronnie Roller).

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Shriners Hospital for Children. A private cremation was conducted by Hayes Funeral Home and A Celebration of Life Ceremony for our dad will be held in the Spring. Family and friends will be contacted with the details in advance. If you truly knew our dad, George Garrido, you would know that he “Did it His Way”.
