TEXAS CITY – Mr. Gerald Wayne Sumners passed from this life Friday, April 10, 2026, in Texas City.
Born August 4, 1945, in Dallas, Gerald was a devoted public servant and man of faith whose life has been marked by service to both his community and his church. He served as a police officer for six years in Dallas and later dedicated 20 years to law enforcement in Texas City, building a long-standing career rooted in protection and integrity.
His commitment to ministry has been just as strong. Gerald was formerly a member of First Baptist Church in Texas City and is now an active member of Arcadia First Baptist Church. Alongside his wife, Betty, he has faithfully served in numerous roles, including children’s church and the church’s finance and safety committee.
Gerald’s passion for mission work has taken him beyond his local community. He spent five years in Mexico doing missionary work, including teaching English through the Southern Baptist Commission. Over the past 20 years, he has also participated in annual summer mission trips, continuing his dedication to spreading faith and service.
Together, Gerald and Betty have been committed to outreach in their own communities as well, regularly engaging in door-to-door prayer walking and sharing encouragement with others. Through his career in law enforcement and his lifelong dedication to ministry, Gerald Sumners has lived a life centered on service, faith, and compassion for others.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Helen (Kilingsworth) Sumners; sister, Jeanette Thompson.
Survivors include his loving wife of almost 62 years, Betty Sumners; daughter, Denise Castor and husband, Rodrigo; grandchildren, Rodrigo “Jonathan” Castor, David Antonio Castor.
Graveside services will be conducted 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2026, at Hayes Grace Memorial Park Cemetery, with Chaplain Clay Bowers officiating.
