LEAGUE CITY - Gilbert L. Gomez, 66, of League City, Texas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 10, 2024. A devoted husband, father, and beloved law enforcement officer, Gilbert was known for his unwavering commitment to family and community. Born on August 15, 1958, in Galveston, Texas, his life was a testament to service, integrity, and love.
A proud graduate of Ball High School in 1977, Gilbert played as #67 for the Tors football team, where his leadership and passion for excellence were evident early on. His experiences on the football field shaped the man he would become—dedicated, driven, and compassionate.
Gilbert's strong work ethic began early, as he took his first job as a newspaper carrier for The Galveston Daily News at just 12 years old. In 1978, he continued his journey at the same newspaper, working as circulation manager before being promoted to City Supervisor.
He later found his true calling in law enforcement, first serving with the Harris County Sheriff's Department before dedicating 23 years to the Galveston Police Department. Throughout his distinguished career, Gilbert earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues and community for his integrity, strength, and compassion. After retiring from GPD, he continued his service with the Galveston County Constable’s Office, Precinct 2.
Gilbert’s legacy lives on through his loving wife, Gloria L. Gomez, and his children, Steven Cowey, Elissa Gomez-Negrón and her husband, Josué F. Negrón, and Nina Gomez. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilberto and Felipa Gomez.
He will be remembered as a man of deep conviction, kindness, and humility, who made a lasting impact on the lives he touched. His dedication to his family, friends, and community will forever be cherished.
Funeral mass will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at St. Mary of the Expectation Catholic Church, 1612 East Walker Street, League City, Texas 77573 with Reverend John Rooney, Celebrant. Interment will follow at Hayes Grace Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation with the family will be from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home, 10412 Highway 6, Hitchcock, TX (409) 925-3501, with a Vigil service beginning at 6:00 p.m.
