Joseph James "JoJo" Balusek Obituary

GALVESTON – Joseph James “JoJo” Balusek passed away at the age of 64 on Saturday, May 16, 2026, in Galveston.

Joseph, known to many as JoJo, was born March 10, 1962, in Galveston. He was a one of a kind, a son, father, friend, surfer, and a familiar face to so many. Known by most as one of Galveston’s smoothest and most stylish surfers, JoJo’s love for the ocean wasn’t just a passion; it was a part of who he was. Surfing brought him around the world, created lifelong friendships, and gave him stories and memories that stretched far beyond the waves. In his later years, one of his favorite places remained the Galveston seawall. He could often be found sitting there watching the world go by, people watching, taking in the waves, and quietly keeping an eye on life around him. JoJo took solace in the quiet things. He was the kind of man who showed up. The kind who drove for hours to sit beside a friend, leave behind letters when words mattered. The kind that trained intensely running on the rocks of the Galveston beach, made breakfast every morning, shared stories, laughed deeply, and loved in ways that became part of people’s routines and lives. His generosity helped those in need of a place to stay, a helping hand, or simply someone who cared, expecting little to nothing in return. This is how he built friendships that lasted decades and left lasting impressions.

To his only daughter Sophie, he gave something even greater: an upbringing filled with love, memories, and a father who was always watching over. The life lessons he imparted will always remain a part of her.

In the days since his passing, stories have poured in from people remembering his kindness, loyalty, humor, and heart. Repeatedly, people described him not only as talented, but as someone truly unforgettable. He leaves behind a legacy carried by every person fortunate enough to know him. JoJo was loved deeply, and he will be missed beyond words.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph James Balusek, Sr.; sisters, Tammy Cavender, Annie Kay Balusek; surfing dog partner, Blondie.

Survivors include his mother, Faye Earline Hoerig; daughter, Sophie Balusek-Hubbell and husband, Carl; sisters, Brenda Delesandri, Cynthia Flores; the loving couple who raised him, Courtney and Rosemary Parks; grand dogs, Hank and Ollie.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 30, 2026, in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home, with Minister Allen Martin officiating.

A paddle out gathering will be held at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, June 6, 2026, at the 1900 Storm Memorial and Galveston Seawall Historical Marker between 51st and 53rd street. All are welcome to join.
