ALVIN – Mrs. Kathryn Irene Nelson passed from this life Tuesday morning, May 12, 2026, in Webster.
Born June 23, 1935, in Bay City, Texas, Mrs. Nelson had been a resident of Alvin for several years, previously of Lithia Springs, Georgia and Santa Fe. Kathryn dedicated much of her life to serving and connecting with her community. She began her career as a nurse at Jeanie Sealey and later became the owner, operator, along with Bill of the Alta Loma Drug Store from 1972 until 1992. Through her years at the drug store, she built lasting friendships and became a familiar and trusted presence to many.
She was a former member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir. She served as a nurse for the Santa Fe School District, where she cared for and supported countless students and families over the years.
Kathryn was also an active member of the Red Hat Society and the Santa Fe Senior Citizens group. She found great joy in spending time with her grandchildren, traveling, and playing cards with family and friends. Her warmth, kindness, and love of fellowship will be remembered by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Clara (Froberg) Caldwell; husband, Billy Nelson; sister, Betty Bartlett; sister-in-law, Judy Caldwell; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Alfred and Viola Nelson.
Survivors include her sons, Mike Nelson and wife, Cindy of Alvin, Fred Nelson and wife, Lori of Santa Fe; daughter, Terri Nelson of Cleburne, Texas; brother, David Caldwell of Austin; grandchildren, Mike Nelson, Jr. and wife, Stacie, Cassi Beard and husband, Richard, Ashli Anderson and husband, Joe, Serena Smith and husband, Justin, Amy Magness and husband, Aaron, Katie Clark and husband, Gerald, David Nelson and wife, Lynsey; great-grandchildren, Mercedes, Destini, McKenzi, Jackson, Spencer, Mya, Karleigh, Konner, Jackson, Emma, Owen and Evie; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family will be from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 6, 2026, in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home, 10412 Highway 6, Hitchcock, Texas, with Pastor Jake Bigford officiating. Interment will follow at Hayes Grace Memorial Park Cemetery.
