LaVerne Dean Blackwell
HOUSTON - Mrs. LaVerne Dean Blackwell passed from this life Sunday afternoon, June 7, 2020, at the age of 92.
LaVerne was born on September 13, 1927 and raised in in the Heights area of Houston. In 1947, she married Virgil Blackwell and together they raised 4 children and owned several gas stations around the Houston area. LaVerne worked many years as a Pasadena ISD school bus driver for the handicapped before moving the family to Santa Fe. LaVerne was very sociable and had many life- long friends. She loved the game Pinochle and always looked forward to her weekly game nights with her Pinochle club, which lasted over 20 years. Her interest in biographical writing lead her to Alvin Community College where she took writing classes. With those lessons, she created priceless memoirs of her and her mother, Pat, to whom she was close. LaVerne was a smart, no nonsense woman who loved the Lord. We know that one day we will see her again.
LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents, Paul Maire and Pat (York) Christina; husband, Virgil Blackwell; brother, Paul Maire; son, Rod Blackwell; granddaughter, Julie Anderson.
Survivors include her son Jeff Blackwell and wife, Linda; daughters, Kathy Edson and husband, Lee, Ellen Anderson and husband, Steve; daughter-in-law, Maria Blackwell (Rod); grandchildren, Tully Edson (Yaeko), Tim Edson (Selina), Teri Taylor (Chris), Michelle Puretz (Michael), Megan Blackwell, Jason Blackwell, Jacob Blackwell; great grandchildren Zoe Taylor, Shelby Taylor, Olivia Edson, Michael Edson, Nathan Edson, Valerie Edson and Will Edson; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 13, 2020, at South Park Cemetery, 1310 North Main Street, Pearland, TX 77581, under the direction of Hayes Funeral Home, 10412 Highway 6, Hitchcock, TX (409) 925-3501, with Dr. Don Robertson officiating.
