SANTA FE - Mrs. Merlyn Jean Spiers passed away at the age of 88 on Thursday, November 6, 2025, in Santa Fe surrounded by the family she loved so much. Her room could not contain all the family that came to be by her side in her last days. She was very much loved.
Born May 30, 1937, in Niles, Michigan, Merlyn was a member of Highland Baptist Church. She will be remembered for her kindness and love for family. She enjoyed sewing and crocheting and was known for creating beautiful Mardi Gras costumes that brought joy to those around her. Her creativity and fun-loving spirit was well known, and she was always up for a game of dice teaching everyone she knew how to play. Above all, she cherished spending time with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Baxter and Nydia Masten; husband, George Spiers, Sr.; son, James Gregory Spiers; brothers, Sonny Masten, Billy Masten, John Saunders; brothers-in-law, Sonny Hilderbrand, Tony Reid.
Survivors include her daughter, Cindy Kater (Doug) of Santa Fe ;sons, George Spiers, Jr. (Melinda) of Santa Fe, Timothy Spiers (Janice) of League City; sisters, Beverly Hilderbrand, Patty Reid, Trudy Austin (Gene) all of Santa Fe; grandchildren, Angela Somers, Seth Kater, Lisa Enriquez (Adrian), Dustin Spiers, Krystal Green (Matt), Alaina Spiers, Michelle Rivera (Marcos); great-grandchildren, Cortlan Sanders, Cayden Kater, Ezekial Kater, Zachary Kater, Chase Spiers (Morgan), Reagan Enriquez, Ryan Enriquez, Kaiya Stelter, Hayden Yarbrough, Mason Green; numerous nieces and nephews will miss her unconditional love as well.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 15, 2025, in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home, with Pastor Josh Spiers officiating. Interment will follow at Hayes Grace Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Seth Kater, Dustin Spiers, Cortlan Sanders, Cayden Kater, Wyatt Brown, Taylor Hilderbrand; Honorary pallbearers will be Zachary Kater, Ezekiel Kater, Mason Green
Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, 10412 Highway 6, Hitchcock, TX (409) 925-3501.
The family would like to thank Dexter and all his staff at Victorious Assisted Living in Santa Fe. We couldn’t have asked for a better place where mom was treated with kindness and respect.
