Lajuana Joy Mentzel

     FRANKLIN – Mrs. Lajuana Joy Mentzel passed from this life Wednesday, January 11, 2017, in Bryan, Texas.

     Born May 8, 1927, in Rogers, Texas, Mrs. Mentzel had been a resident of Franklin, Texas for 18 years, previously of Santa Fe, Texas since 1948. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who enjoyed reading, listening to Elvis and watching her grandkids play sports. Mrs. Mentzel retired from Santa Fe ISD after 26 years of service as secretary to the superintendent and then payroll clerk as Santa Fe ISD grew. Many who knew Joy will always remember her lovingly chauffeuring her grandkids around town in her canary yellow station wagon.

     She is preceded in death by her parents, Hubert Lee and Artie Mewhinney (Reed) Flaniken; her brothers, Hubert Lee Flaniken, Raymond (Monk) Flaniken, Robert Flaniken, Michael Flaniken and her sister, Gladys Jean Shaw.

     She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Herman A. Mentzel, Jr.; daughter, Vikki Hrncir and husband, Jim of Santa Fe; son, Herman A. Mentzel, III and wife, Linda H. of Santa Fe; brothers, Bill Flaniken and wife, Betty of Santa Fe, Tex Flaniken and wife, Margaret of Austin; grandchildren, Gina Bouvier and husband, Rob, Mitchell (Mickey) Mentzel and wife, Jennifer, Kerry Albrecht and husband, Clint, Terry Cambiano and husband, Nick, James M. Hrncir and wife, Michelle, Scott Hrncir; great-grandchildren, Micaela Joy, Braden, Rylie, Kobe, Baily, Cade, Kase, Kyleigh, Preslee, Josh, Jamie, Cassie, Carlie, Zoey, Camden and numerous nieces and nephews.

     Mr. Dean Butler will officiate graveside services at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 16, 2017, at Alta Loma Cemetery, Avenue M in Santa Fe, Texas.

     Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Bouvier, Mickey Mentzel, Clint Albrecht, Nick Cambiano, James M. Hrncir and Scott Hrncir.

     Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 15, 2017 in the chapel of Hayes Funeral Home, 10412 Highway 6, (409) 925-3501.

Memorials in the form of donations may be made in Joy’s name to the Santa Fe Texas Education Foundation, P.O. Box 747, Santa Fe, TX 77517 or the ALS Association, 2251 Chennault, Carrollton, TX 75006.
