Walter Sander, Jr. 

     Walter Sander, Jr., of Hitchcock, passed away at home January 11, 2017, after a lengthy illness.  He was born in Bellville, Texas, on July 6, 1929, to Walter and Adeline Sander.  He grew up in the latter part of the Depression and lived through rationing during World War II.  He attended Bellville Schools, graduating in 1946.  He attended Texas A&M where he participated in the Corps. 

     Walter worked a while in the oil fields before starting work in 1948 for the Santa Fe Railway as a fireman.  In 1951 he was drafted into the Army during the Korean War.  He was honorably discharged in 1953 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. 

     After leaving the Army, he was employed at Monsanto Chemical for 32 years.  He retired as an electrician lead man.  During those years, he also ran a radio and TV business and owned a florist shop. 

     Always active in his community, Walter coached a Little League team for years.  He was an active member of the Hitchcock Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years and was active in the Hitchcock Chamber of Commerce.  He served three terms as Hitchcock City Commissioner and two terms on Hitchcock Independent School District Board of Trustees.  He served nine terms on the Galveston County Juvenile Board and was appointed Municipal Judge for the City of Hitchcock.  He attended the first meeting to organize the First State Bank of Hitchcock in 1960 and helped to start it in 1962. 

     Walter married Margaret Anne DeLay in 1953.  They had two children, Sheri Jenise (Griggs) and Bruce Allen.  He was preceded in death by his wife, daughter and grandson, Scott Sander.

 

     Survivors include his devoted son and best friend Bruce; one brother Lee Sander and wife Bobbie; grandsons, Bruce Allen Sander, Jr., and wife, Samantha of League City, Tyler Bryce Sander and wife, Sarah of Pasadena; granddaughters, Cymber Tisdale and husband, Dustin of Brownfield, Texas, Bryne George and husband, Case of Marietta, Georgia, Briana Kassiri of Pearland; great-grandchildren, Alex Sander, Bryce Sander, Peighton Sander, Hollis Tisdale and Brylin George, Kayden Sander, John Sander, Emily Sander; nieces, Trudy Trochesset and husband, Frank, Terry Adamson and husband, Duke. 

     A memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 21, 2017, at Hitchcock Volunteer Fire Department, 7001 2nd Street, Hitchcock, Texas.  

     The family request all donations be made to the Hitchcock Volunteer Fire Department, Post Office Box 546, Hitchcock, Texas 77563.
